Invasion of human coronary artery cells by periodontal pathogens.
There is an emerging paradigm shift from coronary heart disease having a purely hereditary and nutritional causation to possibly having an infectious etiology. Recent epidemiological studies have shown a correlation between periodontal disease and coronary heart disease. However, to date, there is minimal information as to the possible disease mechanisms of this association. It is our hypothesi...
متن کاملRelationship between invasion of the periodontium by periodontal pathogens and periodontal disease: a systematic review
Bacterial invasion of the periodontal tissues has been suggested as a relevant step in the etiopathogenesis of periodontal disease. However, its exact importance remains to be defined. The present systematic review assessed the scientific evidence concerning the relationship between the quality or quantity of periodontal microbiota in periodontal tissues and development of periodontal disease. ...
متن کاملAntibodies to periodontal pathogens and coronary artery calcification in type 1 diabetic and nondiabetic subjects.
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to examine whether serum immunoglobulin G (IgG) levels to Porphyromonas gingivalis and Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans are higher in type 1 diabetic patients than in controls and are associated with coronary artery calcification, a measure of atherosclerosis. MATERIAL AND METHODS One-hundred and ninety nine type 1 diabetic patients (mean...
متن کاملGene expression profile analysis of Porphyromonas gingivalis during invasion of human coronary artery endothelial cells.
Microarrays were used to identify genes of Porphyromonas gingivalis W83 differentially expressed during invasion of primary human coronary artery endothelial cells. Analyses of microarray images indicated that 62 genes were differentially regulated. Of these, 11 genes were up-regulated and 51 were down-regulated. The differential expression of 16 selected genes was confirmed by real-time PCR.
متن کاملAntibodies to periodontal pathogens are associated with coronary heart disease.
OBJECTIVE We analyzed the association of coronary heart disease (CHD) and serology of periodontitis in a random sample (n=1163) of men (aged 45 to 74 years) by determining serum IgG-antibodies to Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans and Porphyromonas gingivalis. METHODS AND RESULTS CHD (n=159) was more prevalent among edentulous than dentate subjects (19.8% and 12.1%, P=0.003). In the dentate...
